The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released its proposed CY 2023 fee schedule that included specific provisions related to telehealth. Highlights include:
- Extending services added to the Medicare Telehealth services list for 151 after the end of the Public Health Emergency (PHE).
- Extending telehealth policy flexibilities for 151 days after the end of the PHE.
- All sites across the United States, including the patient's home, will be allowed as the originating site for telehealth services.
- Practitioners including occupational, physical, speech-language therapists, and audiologists would be eligible to continue providing telehealth services.
- Federally qualified health centers (FCHQ) and rural health clinics (RHC) can be originating or distant sites for telehealth services.
- Providers will not have to meet in-person visit requirements to deliver mental health services via video or audio-only telehealth visits.
- Audio-only telehealth services will continue for certain service codes.
- Extending some Category 3 telehealth services coverage through CY 2023.
- Adding coverage for prolonged services in various settings permanently
- Sunsetting modifier 95 starting after 151 post end of the Public Health Emergency (PHE).
- Ending the requirement of virtual direct supervision for certain services.
