Compound Medication Best Practices | E-Prescribing Controlled Compound Medications
In partnership with First Databank MedKnowledge (current drug database), DrChrono now supports the ability to electronically send compound medications that contain a controlled substance.
Compound Medication Best Practices
When prescribing compounded medications in DrChrono, it is important to work closely with your preferred compounding pharmacy to confirm the exact formulation and ordering requirements before sending a prescription. This includes verifying the ingredients, strengths, concentrations, and directions needed for the pharmacy to accurately prepare the compound.
Once the correct formulation has been established, you can save the prescription as a favorite to simplify future prescribing workflows.
Please note that the prescribing provider is ultimately responsible for ensuring the accuracy and clinical appropriateness of all compounded medication prescriptions. Before transmitting a prescription, providers should have a clear understanding of:
- Active ingredients included in the compound
- Medication strength and concentration
- Intended therapeutic use and treatment plan
If any clinically relevant details are unclear or cannot be confirmed, the prescription should not be submitted until the information is verified. Compounded medication prescriptions must also continue to meet all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements, including Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) requirements for controlled substances when applicable.
