MIPS ePrescribing: Calculating Measures and Associating Prescribers with Offices

This guide covers two essential aspects of MIPS (Merit-based Incentive Payment System) compliance related to electronic prescribing in DrChrono:

  1. Understanding ePrescribing Calculations: How prescription measures are calculated for MIPS reporting
  2. Adding Prescriber Information to Offices: The necessary steps to properly associate prescribers with office locations

ePrescribing Measure Calculation

The ePrescribing measure for MIPS is calculated using the following formula:

  • Denominator: Total number of prescriptions generated (printed or sent electronically)
  • Numerator: Number of prescriptions sent electronically using the Send Prescription button in DrChrono

Higher percentages of electronic prescriptions contribute positively to your MIPS score.

In the MIPS Dashboard in DrChrono, there are 2 options for reporting: e-Prescribing and e-Prescribing Including Controlled Prescriptions. You are able to utilize the data from one of the options for the reporting period.

Please note you will need to set up the prescribers associated with your offices.

As electronic prescribing of controlled substances is possible, MIPS-eligible clinicians may choose to include these prescriptions in their permissible prescriptions where feasible and allowable by state and local law. If a MIPS-eligible clinician chooses to include such prescriptions, he or she must do so uniformly across all patients and across all allowable schedules for the duration of the performance period. See attached document for more information.

Description

At least one permissible prescription written by the MIPS-eligible clinician is queried for a drug formulary and transmitted electronically using certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT).

Numerator - The number of prescriptions in the denominator generated, queried for a drug formulary, and transmitted electronically using CEHRT.

Denominator - The number of prescriptions written for drugs requiring a prescription in order to be dispensed other than controlled substances during the performance period; or the number of prescriptions written for drugs requiring a prescription in order to be dispensed during the performance period.

Exclusions - Any MIPS-eligible clinician who writes fewer than 100 permissible prescriptions during the performance period.

Definition of Terms & Additional Information

Prescription – The authorization by a MIPS-eligible clinician to a pharmacist to dispense a drug that the pharmacist would not dispense to the patient without such authorization.

Permissible Prescriptions – All drugs meeting the current definition of a prescription as the authorization by a clinician to dispense a drug that would not be dispensed without such authorization and may include electronic prescriptions of controlled substances where creation of an electronic prescription for the medication is feasible using CEHRT and where allowable by state and local law.

For accurate MIPS reporting, you must manually associate authorized prescribers with their respective offices in DrChrono. This step is critical because:

  • Each SureScripts provider ID is linked to a specific physical address
  • This association is not configured automatically in DrChrono
  • Proper office-prescriber mapping ensures your prescription measures are accurately reflected for MIPS reporting

This manual association process allows the system to correctly attribute electronic prescriptions to the appropriate reporting office, ensuring your MIPS data accurately reflects your practice's performance.

Follow these steps to properly associate prescribers with their respective office locations:

Navigate to Account > Offices in your DrChrono dashboard

Select Edit next to the office you need to add prescriber information for

Select the Providers tab

Select the providers who prescribe from this office

Click Save

Associating the providers and offices on this screen is for MIPS reporting only. It does not restrict the ability to prescribe from the offices you have set up in your account.

Ensure the Tax ID # for each office is set up correctly (the MIPS Dashboard supports multiple TIN reporting based on office setup)
