Creating and Using Macros

Macros help streamline your workflows and make charting more efficient. Use them to auto-populate commonly used phrases or notes, and to pull patient information into your Clinical Note automatically.

Create macros

1. Open Macro Buttons. 

Go to Clinical > Macro Buttons.  

2. Create a new Keyboard Macro.

Enter a description in the Label field, then type the text you want in the Generated Text box. Use the preset buttons (such as Patient's Name, Service Date, Pt Demogr, System Vitals and Custom Vitals) to insert information that fills in from the patient's chart. Click Save keyboard macro to save the macro to your account.

3.  Organize your macros. 

Saved macros are listed on the left side of the Macros page. Click and drag them into the order you want them to appear on your iPad and the web. The name of the provider who created each macro appears next to it. 

Using pronoun variables

Pronoun variables fill in the correct pronoun from the Sex field in the patient's demographics, so one macro works for every patient. Each variable has a lowercase version and a capitalized version for the start of a sentence.

 Use macros on the iPad

When you're writing a clinical note, you can pick a custom macro in any free text field. Selecting it inserts your text automatically, with any variables filled in.

Use macros on the web

You can also use your macros in the free text fields of clinical notes in DrChrono's web EHR.

Delete a macro

On the web, go to Clinical > Macro Buttons, select the macro, and click Delete macro.
