Each year, the AMA releases new and revised codes that reflect what is happening in medicine and upon feedback received from medical providers. New technology, new viruses/illnesses, and new understandings are all considered when codes are either created and/or revised.
For 2023, there will be 1,468 new codes, 251 deleted codes, 35 code descriptor revisions, and 36 codes will be converted to parent codes. Significant revisions are planned for E/M codes.
To help providers and billers understand the upcoming changes, the AMA has published a document that explains the code and guidelines coming in 2023. You can find the document here. There are many sources of information, with the AMA being only one.
The updates will be made in DrChrono. Newly established codes not included in the annual update will continue to be added as they are released.
